University School’s athletic coaches offer a challenging and safe environment for boys and girls to compete at every level.
University School is home to one of the premier athletic programs in Greater Cleveland. Our program is rooted in the values of teamwork, respect, effort, and sportsmanship. This ideology is the cornerstone of every athletic camp we offer. Some camps are designed for the beginning athlete looking for an introduction to a sport, others for the student-athlete looking to take their talents to a higher level. Campers learn under the direction of University School coaches and experienced athletes and are grouped according to age and ability.

  • US Basketball Camp

  • Freshman Basketball Boot Camp

    Sean McDonnell, US varsity basketball coach, and his staff are excited to work with incoming freshmen who hope to play basketball at the high school level. The intense boot camp is designed to mirror US varsity basketball practices. Each player will be provided with feedback that includes a schedule for both skill-based and strength-training opportunities over the summer that will be tailored to his ability level and goals.

  • Flag Football Camp

    Boys, grades 1 - 6

    Learning and improving skills and techniques are important for football players at all levels of the game, including younger players excited to play flag football. This camp includes speed and agility training, position-specific instruction, and competitive drills that help develop talents. Camp days include exciting and competitive games that allow campers to practice the techniques they are developing. Camp staff includes US varsity coaching staff and current and former US players.

  • Middle School Tackle Football

    Boys, grades 5 - 8

    Dates: June 8th - 9th; 12th - 15th
    Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

    We are excited once again to host the only tackle football camp in Greater Cleveland for boys entering grades 5 - 8. Football is a contact sport, and proper preparation is essential. The camp will include instruction in blocking and tackling, as well as skill development across position areas. This camp is strongly recommended for rising 5th and 6th-grade students interested in playing in our Rookie Tackle program in the fall and rising 7th and 8th-grade students planning to play middle school football.

    Camp fees include the use of a helmet and shoulder pads, as well as the purchase of individual practice jerseys, practice pants, girdles, and mouthguards. Please note camp begins on a Thursday so that all players have two days (6/8 and 6/9) for acclimation to equipment. Camp then resumes on Monday, June 12, for four days of practice. We do not meet over the weekend.

  • Cross Country Camp

    Coed, grades 7 - 9

    Dates: July 25th - 28th

    In this fun, fast-paced camp, young runners are introduced to critical aspects of technique, training, and diet that will set them up for running success in high school and beyond. Led by Erick Carlson, US Middle School cross country coach, runners will enjoy the Hunting Valley Campus’s gorgeous forest trails and fabulous outdoor track on their daily runs and workouts. Workouts are designed to be helpful and engaging for runners at all levels of experience - from the beginner making his or her first foray into the world of cross country to the veteran with several years of running experience. Workouts will be interspersed with games, contests, and informational sessions to keep things interesting and lively.

  • Golf Camp

    Coed, rising Grades 4-8

    The Golf Camp provides a comprehensive week of golf instruction for the beginner to intermediate skill level golfer.  Led by University School teacher, coach, and former PGA Apprentice Brady Hurley, instruction will also be provided by experienced US coaching staff member Mike Wilson. The camp will help golfers learn basic swing mechanics of driving, hitting from the fairway, pitching, chipping, sand shots, and putting. Also taught will be proper golf etiquette, the rules of the game, and proper club selection.
     
    Campers will have golf-related warm–up time, use of the driving range, and six 9-hole rounds at Shawnee Hills Golf Course (short course). An instructor accompanies each foursome to reinforce proper swing mechanics, focus, and course etiquette
     
    Camp fees include greens fees, driving range use, lesson guide, and daily prizes. Campers bring their own bag lunch and drinks. Campers must provide their own transportation to and from home and the golf course. Register early, this camp is limited to 16 golfers.

  • Hockey Camp

    Boys, entering grades 5 - 8

    Dates: June 13 - July 18, Tuesdays only
    Time: 5:10 - 6:10 pm
    Location: The Pond, 9999 E. Washington St., Chagrin Falls
    Tuition: $140 (includes jersey)

    This camp allows players to see what hockey is like at the high school level. Sessions are one day a week, every Tuesday except July 4. Each session consists of high-intensity drills that put players in game-like scenarios to improve decision-making and comfort in different game situations. Drills focus on skating, stick handling, and shooting. Players will practice their skills during half-ice 3v3 games and full-ice 5v5 games. The camp director is Andy Gerow, US varsity hockey coach and News-Herald 2019 Coach of the Year. Camp staff includes other coaches from the US hockey program and varsity team members.

  • Lacrosse Camp Powered by Prestige Lacrosse

    Prestige Lacrosse Camp is instructional and focuses on the game's finer points. Campers are engaged in a full day of activities, designed to give them a wonderful and complete experience. Our staff includes players and coaches from some of the state's top high schools and collegiate programs who are committed to improving each player’s skill set in all aspects of the game.
     
    We emphasize skill development through high-quality instruction that is reinforced by competition. Camper to staff ratio is capped at 9:1 to ensure small-group instruction. The camp is organized into age and ability groups. Each camper will receive the same top-level instruction, regardless of his lacrosse experience.

  • Speed Development Camp

    Nothing replaces speed. In every sport, the fastest athletes have a significant competitive advantage. Speed and quickness are the focus of this camp, training aspiring young athletes in the proper mechanics and techniques that will link their current levels of strength, fitness, and coordination to performance in their chosen sport. The lead instructor, Nathan Taylor, is an Olympic coach who is internationally recognized as one of the top sprint coaches in the world. He's a certified IAAF Elite Coach and had 10 athletes at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Mr. Taylor is also an assistant coach for the University School track and field team.

    We are announcing a squash camp run by members of the University School National Championship Team and alumni. Campers will work on squash basics, focusing on movement patterns and swing fundamentals. This will include one-on-one feeding sessions, as well as group work. Additionally, daily sessions will consist of games, squash fitness, and team-building activities. Players of all levels will find this camp to be challenging and rewarding. Head Varsity Coach Jon Bridge will be on hand from time to time, to work with players and assess their progress. Each session will be limited in size to enable participants to get personal attention. Racquets and glasses will be available for new players to purchase. Non-marking shoes are required for the wooden floors.

    Swoosh Sports Camp is proud to enter its 21st year of offering an exceptional youth multi-sports program! Campers learn the fundamentals of various activities, participate in friendly competition and have fun in a positive, nurturing environment. A daily rotating agenda gives campers opportunities to experience activities like soccer, basketball, capture the flag, dodgeball, flag football, floor hockey, tennis, lacrosse, track & field, and more!
