Explore the fun and exciting world of aviation! Design and build several different types of aircraft from paper, controlling them through an app on your smart phone or tablet! Learn about stability, flight control systems, center of gravity, lift, and aerodynamics. The week concludes with an exciting competition where you take your best design and compete in a challenging flight obstacle course. Campers keep the powered flight system at the end of the week.
Learn how to program games and develop your own apps in this exciting and informative camp! We create 3-D games in the Unity graphics engine, the most popular tool used by professional game designers. We also create apps for your smartphone with a visual code editor developed by engineers at Google laboratories. You will create apps that can convert text to speech; use the built-in camera to make a simple painting and photo-editing app; and write a game that responds to your input gestures. No prior programming experience is required. Come see how easy it can be to code!
Campers will create their own projects in this intro to coding and electronics using littleBits. By using all the available resources of the STEAMworks maker space, students can create and program a vast array of projects and keep their creation at the end of the camp. Cost includes all materials including a littleBits Coding Kit valued at $300 and any other materials necessary to make their invention. No previous experience in coding or electronics is required.
Learn about aerodynamics! Discover what it takes to build and launch your own model rocket. Campers will build and launch solid fuel model rockets. This camp is designed for young and intermediate builders. Boys enrolled in Day Camp are welcome to add this to their day and counselors will bring campers to and from Junior Rockets. There will be no camp on July 4th.
Campers have full access to all the resources of the Shaker Campus design space and will learn how to use its vast array of tools including 3D printers and a laser cutter. Work through the design process to conceive and build your own project. Problem solving, design thinking and fun are all part of the daily schedule for this introduction to the world of engineering and technology. Limit 6 campers.
This camp takes a more in-depth approach to woodworking. Design and create a chessboard from a variety of premium wood species! Campers will create 32 pieces on a lathe or handcraft specific specifications from their own conceptual design. At week's end, boys will return home with a beautifully crafted chessboard that will be enjoyed for many years.
Join US Rocketry Team Coach Jim Seibyl in a hands-on engineering challenge as you design and launch powerful rockets. The Team America Rocketry Challenge is the world’s largest student rocket contest. Students routinely build rockets that launch thousands of feet in the air, approaching the speed of sound. This camp introduces you to the contest with hands-on discovery of rocketry highlighted by a mini competition with the rockets you design and build.
