Science, Engineering & Design

University School offers many different camps for boys & girls of all ages:

List of 9 frequently asked questions.

  • Aviation Challenge

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Explore the fun and exciting world of aviation! Design and build several different types of aircraft from paper, controlling them through an app on your smart phone or tablet! Learn about stability, flight control systems, center of gravity, lift, and aerodynamics. The week concludes with an exciting competition where you take your best design and compete in a challenging flight obstacle course. Campers keep the powered flight system at the end of the week.

  • Coding & App Development

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Learn how to program games and develop your own apps in this exciting and informative camp! We create 3-D games in the Unity graphics engine, the most popular tool used by professional game designers. We also create apps for your smartphone with a visual code editor developed by engineers at Google laboratories. You will create apps that can convert text to speech; use the built-in camera to make a simple painting and photo-editing app; and write a game that responds to your input gestures. No prior programming experience is required. Come see how easy it can be to code!

  • NEW Learning in the STEAMworks Maker Space

For boys & girls entering grades 3-5

Campers have full access to all the resources of the Shaker Campus design spaces and learn how to use its vast array of tools including 3D printers and a laser cutter. Work through the design process to conceive and build your own project. Problem solving, iterative design thinking and fun are all part of the daily schedule for this introduction to the world of engineering and technology. Limit 6 campers per session.

  • NEW Makerspace Unplugged Game Design

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Learn about all the amazing tools of creation in the makerspace while also designing and building your own board game! Students will learn about basic principles of game design and create a paper prototype of a board game. Then they will playtest and iterate their board game as they create the physical components of it using the 3D printer, laser cutter, and other tools.

  • Rockets Level 1

For boys and girls entering grades 4-7

Learn about aerodynamics! Discover what it takes to build and launch your own model rocket. Campers will build and launch model rockets. Boys enrolled in Day Camp are welcome to add this to their day and counselors will bring campers to and from rocketry.

  • Rockets - Advanced

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Join US Rocketry Team Coach Jim Seibyl in a hands-on engineering challenge as you design and launch powerful rockets. The Team America Rocketry Challenge is the world’s largest student rocket contest. Students routinely build rockets that launch thousands of feet in the air, approaching the speed of sound. This camp introduces you to the contest with hands-on discovery of rocketry highlighted by a mini competition with the rockets you design and build.

  • NEW Sci-Fi Movie Props & Cosplay Camp

For boys & girls entering grades 6-8

Campers will use the resources of the makerspace to learn the building techniques of the movie pros! Campers will create a sci-fi themed character, build costume pieces and several props for their unique character. We will learn about foam fabrication, 3D printing, mold making, sewing costume pieces and advanced painting techniques.  Limit 6 campers.

  • NEW Space Camp: Missions to Mars

For boys and girls entering grades 4-8

Fly to the future on Mars Mission 3030! Design and build habitats on Mars and participate in missions in our Space Flight Simulator, a superb, one-of-a-kind facility ready to launch young astronauts into an unforgettable space adventure. Destinations may include the International Space Station on the Space Shuttle or the Moon on Orion, NASA’s newest spacecraft! Campers will also participate in a drone training clinic in our STEAMworks design lab! Campers will use our Robotics Lab, Science Research Lab, and Rocket Testing Base.
