University School offers many different camps for boys & girls of all ages:

List of 10 frequently asked questions.

  • Aviation Challenge

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Explore the fun and exciting world of aviation! Design and build several different types of aircraft from paper, controlling them through an app on your smart phone or tablet! Learn about stability, flight control systems, center of gravity, lift, and aerodynamics. The week concludes with an exciting competition where you take your best design and compete in a challenging flight obstacle course. Campers keep the powered flight system at the end of the week.

  • Coding & App Development

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Learn how to program games and develop your own apps in this exciting and informative camp! We create 3-D games in the Unity graphics engine, the most popular tool used by professional game designers. We also create apps for your smartphone with a visual code editor developed by engineers at Google laboratories. You will create apps that can convert text to speech; use the built-in camera to make a simple painting and photo-editing app; and write a game that responds to your input gestures. No prior programming experience is required. Come see how easy it can be to code!

  • Learning in the STEAMworks Maker Space

For boys & girls entering grades 3-5

Campers have full access to all the resources of the Shaker Campus design spaces and learn how to use its vast array of tools including 3D printers and a laser cutter. Work through the design process to conceive and build your own project. Problem solving, iterative design thinking and fun are all part of the daily schedule for this introduction to the world of engineering and technology. Limit 6 campers per session.

  • Intro to Science Research

For boys & girls entering grades 7-8

The goal of this camp is for students to understand how to create a research proposal and design an experiment of their own for competition. This camp gives students experiential learning in introductory laboratory experiences, experimental design and application, and scientific writing. Students identify variables, learn the proper use of lab equipment, and study math fundamentals that support independent research. Students who are planning to enter a local science fair will find this camp beneficial.

  • Makerspace Unplugged Game Design

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Learn about all the amazing tools of creation in the makerspace while also designing and building your own board game! Students will learn about basic principles of game design and create a paper prototype of a board game. Then they will playtest and iterate their board game as they create the physical components of it using the 3D printer, laser cutter, and other tools.

  • Rockets - Advanced

For boys & girls entering grades 7-9

Join US Rocketry Team Coach Jim Seibyl in a hands-on engineering challenge as you design and launch powerful rockets. The Team America Rocketry Challenge is the world’s largest student rocket contest. Students routinely build rockets that launch thousands of feet in the air, approaching the speed of sound. This camp introduces you to the contest with hands-on discovery of rocketry highlighted by a mini competition with the rockets you design and build.
